What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain starts in the back of neck and can spread down to one or both of the arms. Severe neck pain is very common, tense muscles are often blamed, for example after working on the computer for a long time, being exposed to a cold draft, or sleeping in an awkward position. It can come from a number of disorders or diseases that involve any of the tissues in the neck, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments or muscles.

What are the manifestations of Neck Pain?

Neck pain usually involves one or more of the following symptoms and signs:

  • Stiff neck
  • Decreased ability to move the head.
  • Muscle tightness and spasms.
  • Pain in the arm
  • Numbness or weakness in the arm or forearm
  • Tingling in the fingers or hand
  • Difficulty with balance and walking
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Who is prone to Neck Pain?

    Neck pain is a common medical condition which affects 30% to 50% of adults in the general population in any given year. Neck pain may occur in anyone due to poor posture, repetitive motion or bad sleep habits.

    What causes Neck Pain?

    There may be several reasons for the Neck pain, which include:

  • Weak or overused neck muscles
  • Narrowing of the vertebral canal, or a slipped (herniated) disc
  • Pinched nerves
  • Sports injuries or other injuries
  • Car accidents involving whiplash
  • Cervical Spondylitis
  • Fractured or collapsed vertebra, which can be related to osteoporosis
