What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain is common, there are many types of shoulder problems that are caused by injuries and sudden or long-lasting inflammation of the shoulder joint. Pain in the shoulder region can extend to the upper arm, the shoulder blade, the pectoral area, the armpit, and sometimes even the neck. Shoulder joint acts like a ball and socket, allowing the arm to move forward, backward, and to both sides, as well as twisting inward and outward, allowing the arm to rotate. The shoulder is a complex joint that has great mobility. This ability to move also increases the chances that it can be injured.

What are the manifestations of Shoulder Pain?

Depending on the condition, one may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain deep in the shoulder joint
  • Pain or difficulty raising arms
  • Loss of strength in one or more directions
  • Dull, aching pain
  • Sensations of pins and needles (tingling) and burning pain
  • Stiffness or reduced mobility
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • An audible clicking sound from the shoulder
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Swelling, bruising, or redness
  • Who is prone to Shoulder Pain?

    Should pain is very common problem these days. A number of individual risk factors are involved in shoulder pain which include: Female gender, Obesity, Older age, and co-existing medical disorders. There is a growing evidence for the role of individual psychological factors (such as distress and depression) in the development of shoulder pain. Incidence of shoulder pain increases with age but in younger people, shoulder pain is more likely to be due to an accident or injury.

    What causes Shoulder Pain?

    Most of the shoulder pains/problems are caused by following:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Arthritis in the shoulder joint
  • Bursitis
  • Tears of rotator cuff
  • Overuse or injury of nearby tendons, such as the bicep muscles of the arms leading to tendon inflammation (tendinitis) or tendon tear
  • Nerve injury that leads to abnormal shoulder movement
  • Poor shoulder posture and mechanics
